Ariana Grande is a helluva busy 25-year-old. Between travelling the globe on tour, filming music videos, regularly posting to her 136 million Instagram followers, and dropping top hits every now and then, it would seem as though she has very little time to fit in a workout or eat healthy meals every day. But don’t be quick to judge, because the pop star is quite literally, the epitome of health and fitness.
Here’s how she keeps in tip-top shape all-year round.
She swears by two exercises
Grande has celebrity trainer Harley Pasternack to keep her motivated. Pasternack – who also trains an endless list of A-list celebs including Megan Fox and Kanye West – is all about putting together simple moves into a concise workout that’s effective and time appropriate.
Her two favourite workouts? Lunges and glute bridges.
“There are a lot of times when we’ll be at a concert venue with Grande, and we don’t have a gym there,” Pasternack told SELF. “So, we’ll walk lunge the hallway. From a time perspective, an equipment perspective, and a safety perspective, it’s all ideal. We’re not jumping and risking hurting her. We’re not doing explosive movements, no heavy weights involved. We want to work her, and we want to do it in a safe way—this does it all.”
Here’s her quick workout:
- Walking lunges – AMRAP for 2 minutes, or around the block
- Glute bridges – AMRAP for 2 minutes
- Repeat three times
She walks. A lot.
Pasternak told POPSUGAR, “I give [Ariana] a step goal every day, whether she be dancing to get that step goal or watching her favourite movies while walking down the treadmill really slowly,” he said. “Twelve-thousand steps a day and she hits it. I can’t imagine her being still.”
Grande confirmed this in an interview with Coveteur: “[Pasternak] is obsessed with the step situation – getting your steps in,” she said. “For the longest time, I was like, how is that more effective than doing a full-fledged workout? It really is. I feel better when I’m moving around a lot.”
Other than running to-and-from shoots and interviews, the sing-star hits her step count by jumping on the treadmill – an exercise she does on the reg that helps her think clearly.
“I have a lot of ideas on the treadmill. If I need help writing or being creative, or coming up with an idea, [I’ll work out]. I came up with the idea for the ‘Side to Side’ video on the treadmill. Usually I’ll listen to throwback ’90s hip-hop, or stuff that makes me amped.” Noted.
She follows a vegan macrobiotic diet
Healthy and clean pretty much sum up the singer’s diet. Ariana is a carnivore-turned-vegan, and enjoys noshing on healthy veggies, vegan protein like soy, tofu, and beans, and substitutes animal dairy with plant-based dairy.
According to Pasternack in an interview with Glamour, Grande loves “daikon, lotus, adzuki beans – almost like a macrobiotic Japanese (diet).” Wait, so what’s that?
A macrobiotic diet is fixed on ideas about types of food drawn from Zen Buddhism, and aims to balance the body’s yin and yang. Dieters should avoid spicy foods, dairy, eggs, meat, sugar, processed foods, and nightshade vegetables (examples include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant).
She focuses on balance
Although her diet may seem a little extreme, know that Grande has said “Thank you, next” to restrictive eating, and instead focuses on listening to her body and loving the person she is.
“Too many young girls have eating disorders due to low self-esteem and a distorted body image,” she told SHAPE. “I think it’s so important for girls to love themselves and to treat their bodies respectfully.”
Pasternack confirms this: “Ariana eats incredibly well and she always had a healthy diet,” he told POPSUGAR.
“I think what I’ve gotten her to do now is to create a more balanced diet and feel OK about indulging and celebrating sometimes. She has widened the ingredients she puts into her diet. She makes a lot of my smoothies, so for the body-reset smoothies she’ll make the white smoothie, red smoothie, and green smoothie.”
She eats to ease her hypoglycaemia
In 2013, the 25-year-old wrote a blog on her Tumblr account addressing eating disorder rumours. Here, she confirmed that any weight she lost was purely because she stopped eating junk food and started making healthier choices.
“I’m eating as much as I was before just the content has changed,” the pop star wrote. “And the way I’m eating now actually helped even out my blood sugar. As some of you guys may know I’ve struggled with awful hypoglycaemia for my whole life and it’s improved a ton since I changed my eating habits.”
